Who Wears Whom: The Masks of Southeast Asia
A fascinating cultural exhibition that invites audiences to explore the deeper meanings of the “mask”
Who Wears Whom: The Masks of Southeast Asia is a fascinating cultural exhibition that invites audiences to explore the deeper meanings of the “mask” — not merely as an object used to conceal the face, but as a medium through which art, belief, spirituality, and identity are interconnected across the diverse peoples of Southeast Asia.
Despite the region’s rich ethnic diversity, its cultures share layers of overlapping traditions, beliefs, and spiritual practices. Masks, in particular, have long served as symbolic vessels that connect the human world with the supernatural, reflecting the complex relationships between people, their communities, and the unseen forces they believe in.
The exhibition features masks from Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, each carrying its own distinctive local history and cultural significance. Alongside these traditional works are contemporary artworks inspired by masks, created by artists from Thailand and abroad. These works reinterpret the concept of the mask through the lens of contemporary society, offering new perspectives on identity, culture, and human connection.
